Un temblor de 5,4 grados de magnitud sacudió hoy la región de Antofagasta, en el norte de Chile, sin ocasionar víctimas o daños visibles, según dijeron las autoridades.

La sacudida de tierra se produjo a las 08.40 hora local (11.40 GMT) y su epicentro se localizó en el desierto, a 26 kilómetros al norte de la mina de cobre La Escondida y a unos 1.400 de Santiago, a una profundidad de 80,1 kilómetros, informó el Instituto de Sismología de la Universidad de Chile. Según la Oficina Nacional de Emergencia (ONEMI), el temblor fue percibido con una intensidad de cinco grados de la escala internacional de Mercalli en la localidad de Peine, de cuatro en Socaire, de tres en María Elena y Taltal y de dos grados en Antofagasta, la capital regional, así como en Quillagua, San Pedro de Atacama, Sierra Gorda, Toconao y Tocopilla.

Más tarde, a las 09.42 hora local (12.42 GMT), otro temblor, de 4 grados Richter, se registró en la región de Tarapacá, con su epicentro bajo el mar, a 58 kilómetros al suroeste de Iquique y a unos 1.850 de Santiago, a una profundidad de 36,2 kilómetros, según la Universidad de Chile. La región de O'Higgins, en el centro del país, fue afectada en tanto por un temblor de 4,3 grados de magnitud a las 09.01 hora local (12.01 GMT), con su epicentro bajo el mar, a 28 kilómetros al noroeste de la localidad de Pichilemu a unos 170 al suroeste de Santiago, a una profundidad de 28 kilómetros.
